American Airlines Flies High with Wi-Fi Starting Tomorrow

Having suffered through a recent 12-hour flight across the Pacific Ocean recently, I happen to know a thing or two about being bored out of my mind. Yes, I had my iPod in tow, but it was a little painful being disconnected from the Internet for such a long stretch of time.

If you’re anything like me, your life revolves a little too much around the Internet. Thanks to American Airlines, you won’t have to disconnect from the matrix the next time you hop on a flight. The company is conducting a “dress rehearsal” of their in-flight Wi-Fi service on tomorrow’s trip between New York and Los Angeles.

The service, which is called GoGo, is being provided by Aircell and will be completely free of charge for tomorrow’s trial. When GoGo goes live for real, it’ll cost you $12.95 for flights over three hours and $9.95 for flights shorter than that. Not the cheapest thing in the world, but it’s still cheaper than those fuel surcharges. Fifteen 767-200 airplanes will be outfitted in all.
