4G LTE Coming to Telus in 2010, Bell in 2011 |
|
It's going to be a tight squeeze, but Telus may be able to have its GSM-based network in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. They're going to be cutting it awfully close, but don't expect Telus to do regular 2G GSM or 3G HSDPA. They're skipping those technologies and heading straight into the fourth-generation.
What's that? You haven't heard? Although Telus is currently a CDMA-based provider in Canada, it is going to transition to providing LTE-based services starting in early 2010. This 4G wireless technology is meant to provide some super speedy mobile broadband data speeds. Will Telus be getting an iPhone 4G at that time? Perhaps.
Telus will be using the 1900MHz and 850MHz spectrum, with the LTE hardware coming by way of Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei. The entire project will cost Telus $750 million.
On a related note, I received an email this morning from Bell saying that they're doing LTE too, but that network won't roll out until 2011. Bell did announce, however, that it would be investing in HSPA infrastructure. Rogers is in for a world of competition.
UPDATE: It turns out that I was misinformed. The Telus date of 2010 does not refer to LTE. Instead, that's their planned launch window for the UMTS/HSDPA rollout. They still plan on doing LTE, but no date was provided. Thanks to Matthew for pointing this out.
